Biography:

Currently the Director of Advocacy for the DISABILITIES NETWORK OF NYC, Lawrence Carter-Long is known primarily for his work in disability advocacy and animal rights. 

As such, Lawrence been featured as a guest on dozens of regional and national media outlets including NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO, the NEW YORK TIMES, NBC's TODAY SHOW and CNN HEADLINE's NANCY GRACE, among other regional and national outlets.  Noted fro his expertise in communications and media, Lawrence has facilitated workshops on effective communication techniques and lectured at colleges and universities across the nation.

Selected as one of 13 delegates representing the United States of America on the 1997 voyage of the SHIP FOR WORLD YOUTH, Lawrence served as co-editor of the weekly newspaper published for participants in the international exchange program.  Between 1999-2004, Lawrence represented the United States Ship for World Youth Alumni Association for three conferences in Tokyo, Japan. He is an alumni of the BUDDHIST PEACE FELLOWSHIP's Alliance for Social Engagement and was awarded the Outstanding National Activist Award from the CULTURE & ANIMALS FOUNDATION in 1998, and a Guardian Award from IN DEFENSE OF ANIMALS in 2004.  Most recently, Lawrence was recognized by the 504 DEMOCRATIC CLUB with the Sandra Schur Emerging Leadership Award in 2006. 


Prior to coming to the Disabilities Network in 2005, Lawrence worked as the Northeast Director for IN DEFENSE OF ANIMALS from 2002-2005, was the Communications Director for the ANIMAL PROTECTION INSTITUTE  from 1998-2002.  He authored regular columns for the ANIMALS' AGENDA magazine from 1996-1999 and was later a Contributing Editor for SATYA magazine.

In August 2004, Lawrence completed the sixth annual SPIN Academy, sponsored by the SPIN Project, in Petaluma, California.  The SPIN Academy is an intensive five day training program designed to facilitate more comprehensive strategic communications planning, with special attention given to specific skills-building in framing, message creation, targeting, developing relationships with reporters, and overall honing of advanced communications skills.

Since 2001, Lawrence has shared his knowledge and expertise of the media as a voting member of the ARK TRUST's (now the HUMANE SOCIETY OF THE UNITED STATES Hollywood Office) selection and screening committee for their prestigious GENESIS AWARDS, which honors positive media coverage of animals and has proudly served on the committee since that time. The GENESIS AWARDS have been presented annually in Beverly Hills, CA each March since 1986 and aired on national television since 1991. He currently serves as an advisor to NYC's LEAGUE OF HUMANE VOTERS and on the Board of Directors of the FOOD EMPOWERMENT PROJECT.

A longtime advocate and supporter of the arts, Lawrence is the founder and Curator of the Disabilities Network groundbreaking project, the disTHIS! FILM SERIES: disability through a whole new lens, which has been featured in the Style section of the New York Times (above the fold!), the Tribeca Trib, the New York Nonprofit Press, and Disability Studies Quarterly.

As a performer, Lawrence can currently be seen as a part of GIMP (formerly FROM THE LIMB) with HEIDI LATSKY DANCE in TWO MEN WALKING, along with dancer Jeffrey Freeze.
